Why Minnetonka Residents Need a Water Softener
Minnetonka uses groundwater, not Mississippi River water. The City of Minnetonka’s 2022 and 2023 drinking water reports say its 18 wells draw from the Prairie du Chien-Jordan and Jordan aquifers. Groundwater usually carries more dissolved calcium and magnesium than softened river water, but the hardness figure is not confirmed here. [NEEDS DATA: hardness from the current Minnetonka drinking water report.]
Because the figure is not confirmed, the technician measures hardness at your tap and sizes the softener to the reading. For comparison, the City of Minneapolis 2025 record lists average total hardness of 94 mg/L (about 5.5 gpg), within a range of 80 to 113 mg/L, which the U.S. Geological Survey rates moderately hard. Minnetonka’s supply does not come from that system, so the figure is not assumed to match it.
